In 1831 Charles Darwin set off in a naval ship to study natural history in South America, changing the course of science forever. Here he devised his famous theory of natural selection that all species evolve from other species. This theory is set out in his definitive work, On The Origin of Species published in 1859. In 1871 he published a further work, The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex, showing how humans evolved from apes.
